The city of Alexandria is a 15.4 sq mi independent city in the Commonwelth of Virginia. The city features a rich history and culture. It is famous for its Old Town shopping district and waterfront. The city is highly urbanized with no large scale agriculture other than garden plots on private land and in public parks. The city is a large consumer of regional agricultural products. It has six active farmers markets in various neighborhoods, two of which operate year-round and are sponsored by the City. The remaining markets are run by nonprofit groups and neighborhood associations. The city has recently undertaken a new strategy called Eco-City Alexandria, which produced an Eco-City Charter and Environmental Action Plan for FY 2009-2030 which addressed the city's commitment to green infrastructure and urban agriculture.
