District of Columbia
The District of Columbia is approximately 61 square miles of highly urbanized landscape with over 588,000 residents and a median household income of $54,812. While no sizeable farming activity operations occur in the District, there are many active urban gardening groups that maintain pocket garden plots throughout the city. Primarily, the District is a large consumer of farm goods from the surrounding region and boasts over 18 farmers markets that operate both seasonally and year-round.
FRESHFARM Markets is a nonprofit organization founded in 1997 that operates 3 farmers markets in the District of Columbia at Dupont Circle, Foggy Bottom, and Penn Quarter.
