King George County, VA

King George County has 131 miles of shoreline on the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers, acres of natural beauty, cultural diversities and historic wealth and is considered the gateway to Virginia’s Historic Northern Neck. Located to the southeast of the Washington region, King George County is situated between the Rappahannock and Potomac rivers and is sparsely populated with 20,637 persons. The 188 square mile county is largely rural, but faces increasing pressure from suburban housing developments. The topography of the county is mostly flat with some rolling hills, stream valleys and river flood plains. Geographically the county is considered to be at the northern extent of the Virginia Tidewater.

The County covers approximately 113,920 acres, has 169 farms on 31,888 acres and 72,718 acres are forested land. King George County boasts 2,300 head of cattle, a small number of hogs, sheep and chickens also are raised here. Crop production is the primary activity of farms in King George County including soybeans acreage at 5,400; over 3,500 acres of corn, approximately 1,500 acres of wheat and 6,000 acres of hay are harvested annually.

Market or truck crops grown include sweet corn, melons, green beans, tomatoes and bell peppers, which are sold locally and to markets in Northern Virginia, Fredericksburg and Westmoreland County. A small number of fruit orchards and vineyards operate in the county as well. There is also a 42-acre glass greenhouse tomato facility as well as a substantial sod farm.
