Welcome to the National Capital Farms Agricultural Statistics Page

The state of agriculture in the Washington Metropolitan Area has changed considerably over the past 100 years. Data collected from the NASS Census of Agriculture as part of the Metropolitan Washington Green Infrastructure Demonstration Project illustrates the extent of the changes in Washington Metropolitan Region agriculture between 1899 and 2002.

The following sets of tables highlight the rich agricultural resources and agrarian history of the Washington region and the declining trend in farming and the loss of agricultural land. The following tables present an overview of the region’s agriculture. For more detailed information on crops or farmers please select the appropriate category from the list below.

The data in these tables were sourced from the USDA Census of Agriculture for the years 1949, 1959, 1987, 1992, 1997, 2002 & 2007. Categories and classifications of data have changed over time. However, not all categories have remained constant over time. For more information on the Agricultural Census or data please visit the USDA’s Census of Agriculture at http://www.agcensus.usda.gov/.
